Digital Payment Frauds: Till a few years ago, most Indians did not pay special attention to digital payment in small transactions. Most of the population likes cash transactions. However, the time has changed now and people are moving faster towards digital transactions. Along with this, the number of cyber crimes including online fraud is also increasing. According to a report, a total of 140,471 cases of online payment fraud have been reported between the financial year 2017 and the financial year 2020, out of which a total of 589.14 crore rupees have been imposed. According to data released by the National Crime Records Bureau, in 2017 and 2018, 3466 and 3353 cases of online frauds were registered respectively. National Crime Records Bureau has started the work of collecting data separately regarding online fraud from the year 2017.

Digital Payment Frauds are widespread on credit card, debit card and internet banking. However, if we and you remain alert, then you can be prevented from becoming a victim of frauds. Below are some important tips to avoid online fraud during Digital Transaction-

  • Use hard passwords to guess which include upper case, lower case letters, numbers and symbols.
  • Do not use the same user name and password for all online accounts.
  • Change password as often as possible, but must change at least every three months
  • Do not share your password or user identification information
  • Always log out of bank, credit card and merchant sites after completing your transaction
  • Do not allow your computer to store user names and passwords for merchant or banking websites.
  • When setting up security questions for online sites, use the wrong information about your personal information, and keep an eye on your answers
  • Secure online transactions should only be on a website that starts with “https: //”. Do not trust any vendor without an “S” after the “http” at the beginning of the web address.
  • Keep records of every internet purchase and transaction, and compare them monthly with credit card and bank statement. Report any discrepancies to the card issuer immediately.
  • Know what each of your credit cards offers as a deterrent to fraud and a liability. Know what the dollar amount limits are for fraud protection coverage.
  • Always use the strongest updated version of a strong anti-virus and firewall security program.
  • To ensure that your program has the latest information about new scams and hackers’ tricks, download and apply updates to your antivirus and firewall programs as they become available.
  • Run a virus scan on your computer regularly.
  • Use an add-blocking software program and a spyware detection program. Keep these programs updated and run scans through them frequently.
  • Do not use the “Easy Pay” payment option or “One-click ordering”. It only takes a few extra seconds to enter a user name and password on a merchant site but it often takes months to recover from credit card-related online fraud.
  • Use the latest updated version of your internet browser. They will use the most recent technology to scrape and protect data sent through the web.

It is noteworthy that law enforcement agencies seek the assistance of information technology experts, professionals as per their requirement to deal with cases of online fraud. In addition, the state / UT is training its police personnel to monitor and deal with online fraud cases.

With a view to strengthening the mechanism to deal with these crimes in a comprehensive and coordinated manner, the Central Government has taken steps to spread awareness about cyber crimes, issue warnings, advisory as well as improve training and cyber forensic facilities.
