Lucknow: All the first year students in the undergraduate and postgraduate classes in the universities of Uttar Pradesh will be promoted to the second year. Final year students of various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in UP universities will be assessed through an examination before obtaining their degree. These recommendations have been made by a three-member committee set up to work out modalities for promoting students.

For universities where both UG and PG courses are run under the annual plan, the committee has decided to promote all the first year students to the second year. The first year results of all such students will be prepared on the basis of their performance in the second year examinations. The universities that will conduct the examination for the first year students in 2020 will prepare the second year results of such students on the basis of their performance in the first year. After this the students will be promoted to the third year. Second year students who did not take the exam last year will also take the exam.

However, the universities which could not conduct the exam for the first year in 2020, the students have to appear in the second year exam through OMR based exam. On the basis of their performance in the examination, they will be admitted to the third year. Both state and private universities will have to conduct the OMR based exam which consists of multiple choice questions before August 13.

OMR is optical mark recognition (also called optical mark reading) and is the process of capturing human mark data from documented forms such as surveys and tests. They are used to read questionnaire, multiple choice test paper in the form of rows or shaded areas. All the results are to be declared by August 31.

According to official sources, all the universities will prepare the result on the basis of their performance in the first semester examination for the students of the second semester who have not given their examination under the semester system. The same formula will be applicable for all UG and PG students who are in odd semesters.

According to Additional SP (ASP) Sansar Singh, the mother of a non-Muslim boy resident of Uttarakhand lost her husband, who was a truck driver by profession, in a road accident last month. She had recently come to live with Mehfooz and his family in Bairua village of Shahbad area. Mahfouz is not married yet.

The woman changed her name to Gulistan.

The ASP further said, “In this case we have registered an FIR as the boys are minors and their conversion was against the law, so we took cognizance of the incident only after coming to know about it.”

He further added, “We have registered a case against Mahfouz, his parents, his brother-in-law who organized the ceremony, the cleric who conducted the conversion ceremony and the barber who performed the circumcision.”

They have been booked under IPC section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) as well as provisions of the Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2020.

As per the provisions of the Act, the person seeking conversion and the convert is required to submit an advance declaration of the proposed religious conversion to the District Magistrate. After this, by the order of the District Magistrate, the police investigation is done regarding the reason for conversion, intention etc. However, no such criteria were followed in this case.
