Kolkata, October 17: A multi-storey residential building caught fire on Ganesh Chandra Avenue in Kolkata on Friday night. This information was received from the sources of Fire Department. West Bengal Fire Service Minister Sujit Bose, who arrived at the scene, said that most of the residents were evacuated from the building and fire brigade officials were conducting intensive search in the building to ascertain if someone was trapped in an apartment flat. Bose said, “We are conducting intensive rescue operations. We still cannot tell the total number of people trapped inside the building. We are trying to find out if anyone is still trapped in the upper floors of the building or not.” Police sources said that about two people are feared dead in the accident so far.

According to media reports, an elderly woman was trapped inside the washroom, causing her death, while a youth jumped from the roof of the building out of fear as a fire spread. About 10 fire tenders and a hydraulic ladder were used to rescue the occupants trapped inside the building. The report said that some people are still trapped inside the building, for which rescue operations are being carried out.
