History of the Temple

According to the priest of the temple, where the polytechnic is today, two-and-a-half hundred years ago there used to be a mola, which was named Hanuman Tila. The name of that mound was changed to Islambari during the Mughal period. In those days, there was a great belief that if a vow is made on the Islambari hill, the vow is definitely fulfilled. Nawab Wajid Ali Shah’s grandmother Begum Alia and her husband Shuja-ud-daula had no children. At the behest of someone, she went to the hill of Islam Bari and came back after asking for a vow. Soon she became pregnant. One night he dreamed that his pregnant child is asking to get the mound excavated. Get the Deity found there, get it established by building a temple. When the excavation was done at the begum’s begum, Hanuman ji’s Deity was found from it. Nawab and Begum’s faith in Hinduism increased. They built a temple there. Here a son was born to Begum. When he was three years old, his health deteriorated greatly. When all the measures were in vain, then the Mahant of the same temple said that leave the child in the temple. Come and take it in the morning. A disappointed Begum had no other way. He left the child there. The next morning, when the Nawab came back with his wife, he saw the child playing well. The Nawab was happy and said to the priest, I will give whatever reward you ask for. The Mahant said, you should organize such an event here on Jyestha Tuesday that devotees should come to this temple. In those days the month of Jyeshtha was going on. On the next Tuesday, the Nawab organized a big fair there and organized a Bhandara for everyone. He was given the name of ‘Bada Mangal’.

Killing monkeys was considered a crime in the Nawabi law.

Gradually, the popularity of Bada Mangal started increasing and it started being organized all over Lucknow. On Tuesday of Jyeshtha month, this fair is seen only in Lucknow and surrounding areas. It shows the mixed culture of Lucknow. As a mark of the Awadh Sultanate, the moon of Dooj remains on the top of this temple even today. While Nawab Wajid Ali Shah used to organize Bhandara on the occasion of Big Mangal, gram was fed to the monkeys in Bandaria Bagh on behalf of the Begums. There was a system of pyew and sherbet. It is said that even in time, the Nawabs of Awadh had faith in Hanumanji. There was a complete ban on the killing of monkeys during the Nawabi period. If anyone accidentally fired at the monkeys, he had to face severe punishment.
